Some areas of the South West are highly rural and as such, farming is widespread. Trading Standards (TS) have a part in supporting such businesses, but also in monitoring and enforcing a huge number of animal welfare regulations. The control of animal diseases is one of the more challenging areas TS is involved in, particularly when trying to stop the spread of a disease in any given animal population. Indeed, where we do find outbreaks of animal disease, there can be a significant impact on our communities and businesses therein, impacting physically, financially and environmentally.
Another area of animal welfare concern to TS is the import and illegal breeding of pets, particularly dogs. TS works with agencies such as the RSPCA and other charities when tackling illegal activities. We also run campaigns to highlight some of the issues a consumer might face when purchasing a pet from a relatively unknown source, such as an online seller.
