What is Buy Wise Be Safe?
Buy Wise Be Safe shares essential advice to support informed purchases enabling consumers to buy, with confidence, when choosing equipment for children aged five and under. We also advocate safe use of equipment, both new and second hand.
To make the information easy to understand, it is grouped into child development categories rather than age brackets as we understand and appreciate that children develop at different speeds. You can find these categories at the bottom of this page.
You can also find product guides at the bottom of this page with handy information about how to buy and safely use many of the products you’ll be considering buying.
Why is it important?
Quite simply – accidents are still happening.
Each year:
- Approximately 55 under 5s die,
- 370,000 attend accident and emergency
- 40,000 visit a hospital as an emergency
- (PHE report 2018 – reducing unintentional injuries in and around the home among children under five years.)
The vast majority of accidents in the home, involving under 5s, are caused by one of the following six threats – Falls, Drowning, Burns and Scalds, Threat to Breathing, Strikes Crushes and Jams, and Poisoning.
We believe the majority of these accidents can be stopped from happening with the sharing of tried and tested best practice and advice.
When and where can the advice be accessed?
Understanding the pressures parents and carers of under 5s are dealing with, the advice is there when it is needed. Either on social media or on this website, great practical safety advice is at your fingertips.
