What is Letting Legally?
Letting Legally is a best practice guide, for landlords and letting agents. It offers advice on complying with the Tenant Fees Act.
Introduced in 2019, the Act outlines payments that are permitted in respect of tenancies.
The guide is produced jointly by Trading Standards South West and the National Trading Standards Estate and Letting Agency Team (NTSELAT).
NTSELAT oversees the operation of the relevant estate and letting agency legislation. It monitors complaints, liaises with local authorities and works with trade and consumer organisations.
What is in the guide for Landlords and Letting Agents?
The guide summarises some of the legal duties and responsibilities involved in letting a property. However, it should not be taken as a complete statement of the legislation, nor as advice about an individual’s circumstances.
Why is this important for Landlords and Letting Agents?
If a landlord or letting agent does not comply with their legal obligations their local authority and/or NTSELAT can impose serious sanctions – including monetary penalties and prosecution.
